I think I brought up gun control first to illustrate a point. Gun
control has been a get-out-the-vote issue for the right wing for some
time, but all the gun laws that affect our daily use of guns are state
laws (yes, I know, a few years back there was a federal ban on
automatic weapons, it's gone now, and hardly anybody noticed its
coming or going except the NRA).

I may be wrong, but I think that every gun law in the country that
would cause serious problems for even the most serious pro-gun person
has been passed at the municipal level. The only places in the country
with serious, chronic gun problems are large cities. People are
generally so opposed to gun laws that no state will pass one, although
several in recent years have passed concealed weapons laws (and
Illinois keeps trying).

It's not clear how the Second Amendment applies to gun ownership
although the Supremes are, I believe, going to take the issue up in
this session, but I don't remember what the law is that they're
looking at.

At any rate, I don't see guns being taken away from us by either state
or federal authorities any time soon: the authorities don't need them
to exercise population control. The laws that followed 9/11 were very
soliticous of the right to buy a gun at gun shows, for example, even
if you were a Saudi national with a knife between your teeth but not
so much with regards to other rights, like the right to be secure in
our own homes and papers. And then there's habeus corpus. I would not
want to be charged with terrorism at this time.

And that's all I have to say about that.

Marie, who is not a lawyer but who has been observing the recent abuse
of the Constitution with some sadness
