One vision of a reduced oil supply is an increase in electric trains. At one time you could travel just about anywhere in the midwest by electric interurban. There were miles of electrified rails in the Pacific northwest and most large cities has extensive electrified local and interurban rail lines. My mother remembers the Big Red Cars and outings to Long Beach. The convenience of the automobile fueled by cheap energy ended the electric rail.
