Don -- What do you think of "Deep Economy"? I checked it out from the local
library but could not bring myself to get past page 4 or 5. I guess I
prefer Don WHitehead to economics. However, I may go back and get the book
again next week.
It is not a book on economics but on what the free market and globalization economies have done to us and how a more local economy may be in our future. Interesting book and it gives me a lot to think about.

Thanks. I re-read pages 1 and 2 last night. I may be able to read more in
the next 2 weeks. I also went to the 100mile diet website and printed out
some things. My 100 miles goes north of Asheville to nearly Atlanta and
past Columbia. LOTS of farmers' markets there. However, probably much of
the produce is grown in Florida or the Orient. It's going to be harder to
find local producers. We've got the milk and meat covered and a few
veggies.
I just read a book titled The Daughters of Juarez which documents the over
300 murders, usually accompanied with rape and torture, of women and young
girls since the signing of NAFTA in 1993. The authors claim that the
deaths, mainly of females working for or applying for work at maquiladoras,
are a direct result of NAFTA. And some of the companies there, like Amway,
General Electric, TDK, are major sellers in our area.
There is more to say about even how the individual states are doing
business. I just spent 3 hours on telephone calls, email, and reading a 15
page state document for me to submit a "bid" for a position I've been doing
for 3 years (interpreting) with only a phone call. As I told the state
procurement officer who is going to present my questions at a state-wide
meeting tomorrow morning, the whole process removes the humanitarian
aspects, turns it into something mechanical, and makes me feel like I'm
considered an adversary to the state. I asked if the purpose is to
eliminate interpreters?! Anyway, maybe Deep Economy actually pertains to my
daily life more than I suspected.
It is not a book on economics but on what the free market and globalization=
economies have done to us and how a more local economy may be in our
future. Interesting book and it gives me a lot to think about.
