A friend of mine grew up near the quad cities in Iowa.
He tells me they had snow on the ground for weeks at
a time. I don't know if climatologists agree with
this but I've heard many references to the "snow
belt". That is a line above which snow does stay on
the ground much of the winter. My guess is that line
is someplace in between his home and mine.

I grew up about 10 miles south of the Iowa border and about 20 miles west of the Mississippi River.

One thing I have yet to understand is why has it become another conservative vs. progressive issue? The twin slow moving train wrecks of Global Warming and Peak Oil will affect us all in many unforseen ways.

I'm not sure that it truly has become divisive. True, there is a
hardcore of radical righters who are whining loudly, but the rest of
us are seeing what's happening. We can argue about why it's happening,
but we can hardly dispute that it is happening.

Hey, the insurance companies are figuring it in. That's pretty mainstream.
