I forgot to mention, when James wrote of digging, that I prefer using
a digging fork--some call it a potato fork--the kind that has four
heavy tines and typically a D handle. It goes in easier and lifts
easier than a shovel, and integrates plant matter better. Of course,
you of the younger backs set care little about effort, right? I also
feel a fork treats the soil community with greater respect.

That is what I like to use of a bed that is easy to work. I make the top dig with a square shovel then loosen the bottom of that trench with the fork. The next trench dirt is dumped into the previous trench and the process repeated. On a good bed it goes quickly and is not much work.

Another one is star of bethlehem, which is currently taking over my
front yard. You can use it carefully and just paint leaves, and it
allegedly breaks down in the soil is a short time.

I treat Roundup like Penicillin. It is something that has an important use but only when needed. We had Horehound growing all over the place. It would get into the dogs ears and no amount of digging the stuff out would eradicate it. In fact my digging just spread it so I has to resort to Roundup. By only using it on the Horehound I was able to control the stuff in a couple of years. Same way with Canadian Thistle in Spokane.

Amen. It's (at this time) extremely effective and fairly benign, but
you don't want to push it. Just look what's happened to most
antibiotics -- don't get a bacterial infection while you're in the
hospital because the antibiotic might shut your kidneys, or other
vital organs, down.
