<<I grew up being self-sufficient, we just did not call it that. It was just
called life. Keeping chickens, cattle and growing most of your own food was
just what we did.>>
Uh-huh. I grew up that way too. Like so many rural people during the
Depression, my grandparents on both sides had plenty of food because they
grew and preserved it themselves (on one side they had plenty of cash, but
that's another story), and they didn't have to worry about losing the roof
over their heads because they had no debt.
For most of my childhood, when we sat down to eat the food was all stuff we
had raised and preserved (or were eating fresh out of the garden -- during
raspberry season Mom always had a huge stainless steel bowl of raspberries
in the fridge, which was our afternoon snack, with fresh whole milk poured
over it).
Marie, who still doesn't have raspberry bushes... but will fix that this
year.
