Winter appears to be coming on no matter what I hope (and I'm thankful for
the long, slow descent to freezing temps).

My main water pipes are all on the east end of the house. The downstairs has
hot water radiators, which of course have piping throughout the house (and
one froze during an unusual blow from the northwest a year ago). The house
was built during the Civil War and is three bricks thick; it doesn't warm up
or cool down very fast. I will be soon, and should have been doing earlier,
putting up inside plastic to serve as a second storm window and keep the
wind out. I've been thinking of just working to keep the water pipes
functional and forgetting central heating, at least for this winter. Is
electric tape wrapped on the pipes enough?

Or should I just bite the bullet and get the plumber out here to keep at
least the house system running?

Comfort is not real high on my priority list, but I just hate busted pipes.

Marie
