We have two of such items which even now I am using to comfort my lower back from a stupid attempt to touch my toes. Not sure if the contents are flax seed or something else. These were made by our neighbor back home
My wife bought me one several years ago - it is basically a sock that is filled with rice. Both ends have a handle made from rope that is about 1/2 in. thick. After some investigating, she made one for each of our kids. She simply took a tube sock, and filled with normal grocery store clean white rice, and then sewed the ends shut. She also put ears and nose and faces on them to make them look like a critter of some sort. The microwave times are the same as for the store bought one.
You can test this by simply putting a quart of rice in a clean sock, tying a knot in the end, and then microwaving.
