Tried and True Tips for a Flourishing Flower Garden Wednesday, March 6, 6:00 -8:00pm @CCE-Tompkins Education Center, 615 Willow Avenue, Ithaca, NY Designed especially for beginning ornamental gardeners, this class reveals basic flower gardening lessons gleaned from area master gardeners. In other words, we let you in on what we know now that we wish we had known when we were beginners! Tips from our experienced ornamental gardeners are intended to save you time, expense and labor; prevent you from making easy-to-avoid mistakes; and start you down the path toward making gardening a fun and rewarding pastime filled with beauty. Topics include: Selecting plants right for the garden conditions nature has given you, Designing pleasing flower beds, Getting along with creatures, Saving time and money, Learning as you go. It’s time for beloved annual CCE Tompkins Community Seed Swap. Master Gardener Volunteers will be on hand to answer all your seedy questions. Go home with lots of locally adapted seeds from other local gardeners. Bring your own seed collection and set up a table to share your abundance. Children are welcome! Botanical Slide Show: Walled Gardens and Wild Landscapes of Ireland Sunday, March 10, 2:00-3:30pm @CCE-Tompkins Education Center, 615 Willow Avenue, Ithaca, NY Chrys Gardener will present slides of public gardens and natural areas in the west of Ireland, where she lived from 2008-2012. Ireland is a gardener's paradise, with a warm moist, temperate climate (zone 9). One of these areas, the Burren, is an unusual limestone karst landscape, where alpine and arctic plant species grow side-by-side. Suggested donation: $3-$10/person pay what you can afford. We will talk about integrating flowers and herbs and explore a few style of planning including drawings, spreadsheets, journals, and online programs. Come with a drawing of you garden and a list of what you plan to plant and we will have some time to start working on your plan. Spring Propagation of Fruit Plants Wednesday, March 27, 6:00-8:00pm @CCE-Tompkins Education Center, 615 Willow Avenue, Ithaca, NY Sean Dembrosky, owner of Edible Acres in Trumansburg, will lead this hands-on workshop on propagating edible perennial plants from cuttings, seeds and by layering. Species covered will include currants, jostaberries, gooseberries, hardy kiwi, elderberry and nut trees. Sean will also demonstrate taking cuttings of willow and other useful/ornamental woody plants.
