Planning and Planting a Seed-Saving Garden

at Cornell Cooperative Extension of Tompkins County, 615 Willow Avenue, Ithaca
Learn how easy it is to incorporate seed saving in your garden by growing vegetables that you can eat and still harvest seed from. You will learn the basics of getting started with seed saving, then we will do some hands-on planting in the seed saving demonstration garden at CCE.  Cost: $5-$10 (self-determined sliding scale). Seed Saving Techniques: Selection, Rogueing and Hand-Pollination

at Cooperative Extension Education Center, 615 Willow Avenue, Ithaca NY
This class will cover some techniques that will help you save healthy, viable seed for next year’s garden. You will gain hands-on experience in learning to select the best plants for seed production, rogueing out off-types, identifying disease symptoms on seed-bearing plants, and will learn how to hand-pollinate crops like summer squash to prevent out-crossing. Seed Saving Techniques: Harvesting and Drying

How do you know when your seeds are ready to harvest? This hands-on class will include collecting seed from the CCE seed saving demonstration garden, fermentation of tomato seeds, and drying and packaging techniques for long-term storage/  Cost: $5-$10 (self-determined sliding scale). Compost Fair

Sunday, April 28, 11:00-4:00pm

Celebrate spring's arrival by stopping at the Compost Fair to see and experience ALL aspects of composting. There will be food, music, interactive displays, activities for kids and continuous tours of our composting demonstration site. Learn about the various ways to compost and have your questions answered by Master Composters-just in time for spring clean-up and gardening! The Fair is held in conjunction with the 4-H Rubber Duck Race & 5K Run so there will be lots of displays and fun activities for children of all ages.  Admission is free and open to the public.

Planning a Rock Garden? Ideas and Tips

Are you ready for a new garden challenge? Why not try rock gardening! In this class you will learn the basics to get you started. After a rain-or-shine tour of the Al Wurster Demonstration Rock Garden, come indoors to learn about its construction, easy plants to grow, and options such as troughs. A slide show will include photos of the 100-year-old Frederick Heutte Rock Garden at White Pine Camp in the Adirondacks. Dividing Daylilies and Other Perennials
Thursday May 9, 6-8 pm
at Cornell Cooperative Extension of Tompkins County, 615 Willow Avenue, Ithaca
Spring is the best time to divide many perennials, and an OK time for many more.  In this hands-on workshop, we will demonstrate how to divide perennials such as daylilies, Siberian iris, Hosta, bearded iris, or phlox.  Come prepared to work!  We will tackle plants from the Teaching & Demonstration Gardens at Extension and Master Gardener private gardens.  Rain or shine (indoors if wet).  Fee:  $12.  Limited to 10 participants; prepayment is required to hold your place.  Please call (607) 272-2292 to register, direct questions to Pat Curran at pc21 AT cornell.edu.

“Paradise Lot: Growing an Edible Garden Oasis” - a talk by author Jonathan Bates

2013 Spring Garden Fair & Plant Sale

at Ithaca High School, 1401 N. Cayuga Street off Rt. 13, Ithaca

Over 40 area growers and garden groups will offer a huge variety of annuals, herbs and specialty perennials at the largest Garden Fair in our region! 2013 Open Days Garden Tour

at locations in Lansing and King Ferry, NY
Three outstanding private gardens in the Ithaca-area will be open to visitors for one day only! Admission to each garden is $5 per person. The tours are drop-in and self-guided with no reservations required, and are held rain or shine.
