Heating represents the greater part of residential energy costs in cool
climates. As conventional sources of heat become more expensive,
attention is turning once again to passive solar design, which can
enable all the heating needs of a house to be supplied by solar energy,
supplemented in winter with wood heat. It is still rare, however, to
find direct comparisons of various approaches to new and retrofitted
passive solar designs.
In "Three Farmhouses: A Study in Passive Solar Design," TCLocal
contributor Karl North reviews passive solar principles and shares his
40-year-long effort to implement these principles in the real world of
existing structures and financial limitations. Anyone attempting to
