Tim,

Yes, I looked up an article Judge had written and had noted his
"philosophical school" take on Paul.

On the other hand, didn't Schweitzer make the observation, several times in
_Paul and His Interpreters_, that 2nd century Christian
apologists, who all attempted to legitimize Christianity using philosophical
interpretation, practically ignore Paul? I would have
to agree with him that we should expect the 2nd century apologists to have
made more use of Paul if he had been understood as
portraying Christian teaching as a philosophical tradition.

Strom seems more interested in Paul's approach to "ministry" as one to be
imitated by modern practitioners of ministerial art.
Personally I am a little wary of projecting our modern conceptions of
ministry, mission and preaching back into Paul's time. While I
realize that evangelicals do highly prize the tactics and practices of the
early church, what we do today is an interpretation of
the scant evidence of the NT, and can amount to a kind of "modernism" if
pushed too far.

Dave,

Sorry for the delay in replying to your request. I'm on leave at present, and
I do not have access to the articles concerned. In
broad terms, Judge has argued for many years that early Christian meetings
would not have been viewed as *religious* occasions. They
differ significantly in form and ethos to meetings of mystery cults.
Alternatively, Judge proposes that they are more akin to philosophical
meetings, engaging with a speaker (eg. Paul) associated with
a distinctive philosophical perspective or school.

In addition to Judge's work, I'd also recommend Mark Strom's 'Reframing
Paul: Conversations in Grace and Community', who develops a similar line of
thought. I have a review of Strom's work available at:
