Dave,
Sorry for the delay in replying to your request. I'm on leave at present, and I do not have access to the articles concerned. In broad terms, Judge has argued for many years that early Christian meetings would not have been viewed as *religious* occasions. They differ significantly in form and ethos to meetings of mystery cults. Alternatively, Judge proposes that they are more akin to philosophical meetings, engaging with a speaker (eg. Paul) associated with a distinctive philosophical perspective or school.
In addition to Judge's work, I'd also recommend Mark Strom's 'Reframing Paul: Conversations in Grace and Community', who develops a similar line of thought. I have a review of Strom's work available at:

Tim,
There have been so many great suggestions in this thread that I think it is time for me to start back to the library after a 2 year
hiatus.
In the meantime, could you provide us with a brief summary of how Judge answers the rhetorical question he poses in the article's
title?
Many thanks.
Respectfully,
Dave Hindley

The writings of Em. Prof. Edwin Judge are a 'must read' in this area, dating back to his pioneering 'The Social Pattern of Christian
Groups in the First Century' (1960) and many subsequent articles.
More recently, see his 'Did the Churches Compete with Cult Groups?' in J.T. Fitzgerald et al (ed.), Early Christianity and Classical
Culture, Brill, Leiden, 2003.
