sort of right] in verse 7 is ambiguous - does it refer to
the singular person who has died by baptism into the death
of Christ or does Paul intend to refer to Christ in this
construction?

Yes.

I would suggest that the entire context is inviting us to understand that the believer is called into the history of Christ. The transition from the age of sarx (flesh) which Christ experienced in His resurrection is now the transition that has been experienced by believers (in a preliminary way, looking forward to the resurrection of the body); they are no longer members of the age of sarx (or, to use Paul's terminology of ch 6, "under Sin").
