The population of Ephesus in the second/third centuries CE is usually put
at ca 200-225,000. I think it's important for students to recognise the
difference between 'population' and 'citizens'. Of the latter, in Ephesus
there were probably only about 40,000.
In general, the advice is: think small in regard to christian churches of
the first century. There's a good chance that the 26 or so names mentioned
by Paul in Rom 16 represents the whole lot [at Rome or Ephesus or wherever
Rom 16 might be directed].
