Carol,
I just thought of another angle. Acts depicts Paul in a manner similar to
Paul's 1st century contemporary, the traveling sage Apollonius of Tyana,
who was also known as a excorcist and wonder worker.
Usually, comparisons are made between Apollonius and Jesus (due to the
wonder working), but I have always been struck by the similarity of the
Acts story to the story relayed in Philostratus' _Life of Apollonius",
written about 200 CE.
