Thursday, November 11
Wembley (http://www.myspace.com/wembleystadium)
Deleted Scenes
The Modern Skirts (http://www.modernskirts.com/)
The Casbah, Durham

Thus far it's looking like having two more midsize rockclubs in Durham mostly means me having to list a lot more of the sort of midlevel outta-town bands who will be disappointed at the comparatively low turnout that they'll get in the Triangle on a Thursday night with at least 7 other shows up against them.

Of course, Wembley is only playing *one* show this Thursday night, and it's this one, which means that the clued-in locals will be at the Casbah.

Thursday, November 11
Heads on Sticks (http://www.thisisstrange.org/)
Gray Young (http://www.myspace.com/grayyoung)
Bright Young Things
Tir Na Nog, Raleigh

Heads on Sticks is the side-project of Birds of Avalon bassist Dave Mueller. His brand-new album, "Mocking Bird," is a woozy-and-wonderful blend of psych, funk & krautrock influences; I believe I read somewhere that this show marks the debut of a new incarnation of the Heads on Sticks live band.

Of course you also get the epic shoegaze revival of Gray Young, and the 70s-style pubrock of the Bright Young Things.

Thursday, November 11
Boat Burning (http://www.myspace.com/boatburning)
Gift Horse
Deluxe Handcuffs (http://www.myspace.com/deluxehandcuffs)
Nightlight, Chapel Hill

Thursday, November 11
Embarrassing Fruits (http://www.myspace.com/embarrassingfruitsband)
Solar Powered Sun Destroyer
Motorco Music Hall, Durham

Thursday, November 11
Priestess (http://www.priestessband.com/)
Naam (http://www.myspace.com/naamdestroysfaces)
Local 506, Chapel Hill

Thursday, November 11
It is Rain in My Face (http://www.myspace.com/itisraininmyface)
Javelin (http://www.myspace.com/hotjamzofjavelin)
Reptar
Kings, Raleigh

Thursday, November 11
The Dynamite Brothers (http://www.dynamitebrothers.com/)
Weisstronauts (http://www.weissy.com/weisstronauts/)
The Cave, Chapel Hill

Thursday, November 11
The Jackets (http://www.reverbnation.com/TheJackets)
The Tomahawks (http://www.myspace.com/jeffcrawfordmusic)
Pour House, Raleigh

Friday, November 12
Amy Ray (http://www.daemonrecords.com/beta/amy/amy.html)
Mount Moriah (http://www.myspace.com/mountmoriah)
Cat's Cradle, Carrboro

Nowadays the only Mount Moriah guarantee you're going to get is that Jenks Miller & Heather McEntire will be there. At Troika Saturday night, the rest of the band consisted of Phil & Brad Cook of Megafaun, and Lee Waters (of literally too many bands to mention here). Two nights later at the Layabout, Will Hackney was involved.

No big deal regardless, as it's the songs that bring the shivers.

Friday, November 12
Gift Horse
The Mercators (http://www.myspace.com/themercators)
Temperance League (http://www.myspace.com/brucehazel)
Motorco Music Hall, Durham

Friday, November 12
Shark Quest (http://www.mrg2000.com/merge/bio.html?id=sharkquest)
Transportation (http://www.myspace.com/transportation)
The Cave, Chapel Hill

Shark Quest are back! What seemed like it had to be a one-off last month for Minus Sound Research has extended out to at least this show as well.

Of course, since Chuck Johnson is still in California, the second-guitarist seat will be occupied by Kevin Dixon. And any student of the history of Zen Frisbee will tell you that having both Dixon brothers in a band is a tricky tricky thing.

Friday, November 12
The Loners (http://www.demonbeachrecords.com/loners.html)
Static Minds
Maldora
Kings, Raleigh

This is a release party for the new Static Minds record.

Friday, November 12
Monsonia (http://www.monsonia.com)
Minor Stars (http://www.myspace.com/minorstars)
Make (http://www.myspace.com/thebandmake)
Nightlight, Chapel Hill

This is an album-release show for the new Monsonia album, 33.3, which sounds huge and abrasive and gorgeous.

Friday, November 12
Applesauce (http://www.myspace.com/applesaz)
Possum Jenkins
Broad Street Cafe, Durham

Friday, November 12
Scott Biram (http://www.scottbiram.com/)
The Alcazar Hotel (http://www.myspace.com/thealcazarhotel)
The Casbah, Durham

Saturday, November 13
Systems
Phantascist
Nightlight, Chapel Hill

This is an early show (8pm) and is also a benefit for 11 people in Asheville who may or may not be anarchists & may or may not have actually been involved in the May Day mini-riot/vandalism spree that they were arrested for.

Saturday, November 13
The Alcazar Hotel (http://www.myspace.com/thealcazarhotel)
Katharine Whalen and Her Fascinators (http://www.myspace.com/katharinewhalen)
Those Eno River Boys
Local 506, Chapel Hill

I saw one or another of Katharine Whalen's bands opening up for the Carolina Chocolate Drops earlier this year, and I have to say I found the whole thing captivating. She's still got everything she ever had, and then some.

Saturday, November 13
Lud (http://www.ludland.com/)
Titanium Rex (http://jackwenberg.com/)
The Cave, Chapel Hill

Sonar Strange was in any number of local bands back in the late 80s, including Foreign Bodies, and more recently has appeared with Twilighter, the Neil Diamond All-Stars, and Fantastico!, to name but a few. She busted her ankle real good a couple of months ago, and since we're still living in George Bush's America, that means her friends are getting together to throw a benefit for her.

Lud are one of the two or three finest live acts in the Triangle. Titanium Rex is an alias for a fellow named Jack Wenberg, who had a bit of a career as a local power-pop hero back around the turn of the 80s/90s.

Saturday, November 13
The Ts (http://www.myspace.com/thettttt)
Luego (http://luegomusic.com/)
The Spring Collection
Kings, Raleigh

Saturday, November 13
It is Rain in My Face (http://www.myspace.com/itisraininmyface)
Jacquelyn Lee (http://www.myspace.com/jacquelynleeee)
Los Naturales
The Pinhook, Durham

This is a showcase for Vinyl Records, the UNC student-run label. Los Naturales is a garage and/or punkrock band with former WXYC Music Director Montgomery Morris. Jacquelyn Lee plays accordion as well as a variety of other instruments, both toy and non-toy, and comes across on record as something akin to a homegrown CocoRosie.

Sunday, November 14
Honored Guests (http://www.thehonoredguests.com/)
WXDU 88.7 FM, Durham

The Honored Guests have had a banner year, releasing an outstanding EP ("Into Nostalgia") and an almost equally awesome full-length ("Please Try Again"). Hear them play [hopefully non-cussy] selections from both at 4pm at 88.7 FM or wxdu.org.

Sunday, November 14
The Belleville Outfit (http://www.bellevilleoutfit.com)
Berkeley Cafe, Raleigh

Tuesday, November 16
Bright Young Things
Wesley Wolfe
Jon Lindsay
Motorco Music Hall, Durham

This is a 2nd-birthday party for the blog Sunset in the Rearview. Wesley Wolfe put out one of the great albums of 2010, "Storage," and then assembled a band to play it.

Tuesday, November 16
Sarah Lee Guthrie and Johnny Irion (http://www.sarahleeandjohnny.com)
The Autumn Defense
The Casbah, Durham
