Thursday, May 13
=95 8P Marie Vanderbeck Quartet (jazz/swing/blues)
Hear jazz sweet and sassy =96 as it is meant to be heard. Throw in a
bit of salsa, some blues, a touch of folk and you have an eclectic
sound that will have you singing along and tapping your feet =96 maybe
even dancing!

On keyboards, Erich=92s smooth and charming style will have you swaying
in time. His music ranges from relaxing to high energy dance music.
And you=92ll love his improvisations =96 tunes that you thought you knew,
you=92ll now hear with a different beat.

Stan=92s sax sound moves you from mellow to foot-tapping. He makes his
sax talk =93sweet and sassy=94 all the while moving you in a gentle
rhythm.

And this background fits Marie=92s vocals so well. Marie=92s phrasing and
tuning brings out the best of each song. Her rich voice takes you
high and takes you low.

That=92s what makes this jazz group SWEET AND SASSY.

Featuring:
Marie Vanderbeck - vocals
Ken Broun - keyboard
Stan Levy - sax

=95 10P Slow Death (punk/rock/neo-soul)
After several unseuccessful attempts at mining alpacas for wool and
chickening out of bank robberies a young Jesse Swan Thorson thought he
could make himself rich at playing music. He had no idea how wrong he
was. Boasting drunkenly at a divebar in Fargo, ND he convinced some
local half-wits to form a band and Pretty Boy Thorson was born.
Stringing together music ripped off from Mearle Haggard songs and
misunderstood bible quotes, Pretty Boy Thorson managed to write and
record several records. They embarked on many tours which were mearly
a thinly veiled excuse to search for Curly's gold after
misunderstanding a late 80's Billy Crystal movie. Building what few
people would call a 'huge following' by trading tapes advertised in
Soldier of Fortune magazine the band skyrocketed to mediocrity.
Quickly tiring of Mr. Thorson's deranged antics members of the band
fled to opposite coasts of the United States. Realizing he was too
lazy to continue on his own, Jesse along with life partner David
Strait recruited punk legend Jonny C from the critically acclaimed
Rest of Us(Tampa, FL) and a guy named Mike from some bullshit band
called The Ergs, they changed their name to The Slow Death to stop
running from the obvious. They are now considering touring with top
bands and mabye getting a haircut.

=95 10:35P The Anchor (big beat/punk/rock)

11:15P Red City Radio (rock)
We are a truly democratic band, devoid of ego, unshackled to trend or
style with no chief songwriter, no dominant personality, no unilateral
decisions. Only solidarity and truth.

Sloane Daley of Punknews.org said:
"...in terms of of composition they beat just about any band playing
this style of music today. Every song on here is a winner --
completely authentic, earnest and catchy."

Punknews.org said:
"This is exactly the type of gravelly, upbeat punk rock with a market
already cornered by No Idea and Kiss of Death. Some bands just do it
better than others, though, and I guess Red City Radio are doing it so
well that a bigger label noticed and stepped up to the plate for
them."

"This EP . . . is definitely one of the better examples of it in
recent memory."

"The general carmraderie and energy here gives Latterman, New Bruises
and Hot Water Music fans in general new reasons to continue
breathing."

Midnight Red Collar (rock/indie/alt)
=93There=92s a feeling in the room when Red Collar is playing that is hard
to describe. It is as though the club or room has been lifted from its
foundations and pulled straight up=96that we=92ve been taken out of time,
and transported to a time before ironic posturing became the norm. A
time before we used terms like post-anything. I=92m not talking about
false nostalgia for a better time. Just a different time. When this
band plays it is ALRIGHT to yell along and to clap your hands.=94 -Evan
Rowe, Maple Stave, Des_Ark

Friday, May 14
=95 8P Matt Woods (southern rock/folk rock/country)
Here's the short story. Matt has been a figure in the East Tennessee
music scene for the past ten years. Located in Knoxville, TN, he has
performed in several bands as well as working as a solo artist. Matt
has shared the stage with the likes of CAKE, Drivin' n' Cryin', Will
Hoge, Kevn Kinney, Roger Clyne (of The Refreshments), Garrison Starr,
Tim Lee, Mic Harrison (of the V-Roys and Superdrag), Doug Gillard (of
Guided By Voices) , Col. Bruce Hampton & the Code Talkers, Zac Brown,
Graham Colton, Brian Vander Ark (of The Verve Pipe), The Features and
a seemingly never-ending list of talented independent artists who
aren't getting the widespread respect they deserve from points around
the globe. Matt spent his earliest years with a band called Magpie
Suite, which received a bit of notoriety around the southeast and
produced three albums. Until recently, he worked devotedly with his
latest band Plan A, where he wrote songs, sang, played guitars, played
cards, drank beers, and often drove from show to show along the east
coast in a big, brown van named Daisy. Plan A released and supported
two full length albums between 2004 and 2009. Through solo
performances and band appearances, Matt has averaged over 200 shows a
year for the past few years, an average that would be higher if it
weren't for a very unfortunate thumb-wrestling accident in the spring
of '06. At home, Matt also performs in a duo called Adapted Wood with
long time friend Tod Sheley every Monday night, and in several other
projects featuring a number of talented musicians. He can also be
found sitting in from time to time at random shows in the Knoxville
area.
These days Matt is focused on writing new material and performing
solo shows both at home and on the road in support of his 10 year
acoustic retrospective called "Broken Strings & Beer Specials."

=95 10P The Tim Stambaugh Band (bluegrass/roots)
Tim is an established musician living in Carrboro, North Carolina.
He has been a fixture on the North Carolina bluegrass scene for nearly
two decades. His experience and dedication to his craft allows him to
assemble the perfect show for any occasion or environment.
Tim learned to play the banjo and guitar while growing up in the
blue ridge mountains near Asheville, NC. He relocated to Chapel Hill
in the late eighties to play banjo with Sugar Hill recording artists
The Shady Grove Band. In the early nineties, Tim went solo, assembling
a rotating cast of crack bluegrass instrumentalists to complement his
vocal stylings.
The Tim Stambaugh Band has released several full length recordings
including Russian Blue (1992), Driftwood (1997) and Half a Heart
(2004). Tim has toured the world with his music several times
including a stint playing and recording with the German bluegrass band
Catch-a-Touch and extended tours in Taiwan and Eastern Europe with the
Tim Stambaugh Band.
=93When Tim Stambaugh plays music, he is giving something back. His
music embodies real sentiments from the common man=92s perspective.=94 -
New York Times Magazine
"Tim's Stambaughs' first concert on CoMMA's BackPorch amphitheatre
series seals the deal that he will be back by popular demand. Tim's
range of style and quality of performance endeared him to our audience
as a special gifted artist who truly gives it all in his music." -Bill
Wilson, Director CoMMA Ampitheatre

Saturday, May 15
=95 8P Paul Daniel (folk rock/acoustic)
Paul Daniel is a powerful singer/songwriter and guitarist from
Raleigh, North Carolina. Paul thrives on the raw purity of one man and
one instrument, yet is always pushing for an even fuller folk rock
sound. His guitar work is layered and complex drawing influences from,
rock, blues, country, bluegrass and folk. Imagine Bruce Springsteen,
Mark Knopfler, Norman Blake and Jerry Garcia all channeled into one
guitar. The result is a rich foundation for songs with vivid scenes,
lingering stories and unforgettable lyrics.

Jordan and the Sphinx EP Release Party

=95 10P Charlie the Horse (americana)
"... a dynamic, flexible and potent ensemble, whether they=92re
performing arrangements that are stripped-down and acoustic ('Hey
Girl') or rocked-out and propulsive ('Hey Boy'). They use whatever
instruments they can get their hands on (kazoo, concertina, autoharp)
as well as more traditional instruments, and the result is a band that
can be a 'normal' rock band or one that=92s a bit more wacky, sometimes
simultaneously. That=92s called range, and Charlie the Horse has got
it." =97 John Staton, Star News

"There=92s a lot going on here, especially considering there are only
eight tracks on When U Gonna Luv Somebody. It=92s the rare debut album
that both promises much for the future and delivers plenty for the
present."
=97 Travis Packer, The Minimum Blues

=95 10:45P Jeremy Blair from Effingham (folk rock)
Drawing influence from the likes of Wilco, Built to Spill, and The
Pixies, Jeremy Blair From Effingham is a folk rock band formed by
friends and among friends in the thrivingly independent music culture
of Raleigh, Durham, Chapel Hill where inspiration to create and
perform original music over flows.

=95 11:45P Jordan and the Sphinx (roots music/folk rock/soul)
According to Jordan, "It all started when Adrienne got pregnant." But,
truthfully, Jordan has had this love affair with music most of his
life. Born in 1981, he was the third son of two musically gifted
Southern Baptist missionaries to the Dominican Republic. It didn't
take long before Jordan was in love with that six string plywood box
his older brother got for Christmas, and by the early 1990's, he had
abandoned all else for guitar playing and songwriting.

Fast-forward to Spring 2005. Married. Discharged from the Army. Living
in Knoxville, TN. Working a grave yard shift on a loading dock.
Floundering through life... then the penny dropped. This father-to-be
was inspired like never before. He started writing. Channeling his
mixed emotions: from his reeling mind, into his guitar, and then out
of his mouth. He named the first song "Number 3". More tunes soon
followed. They came in two and three at a time. Adrienne (and the
child she bore) was a constant muse and collaborator. Before long,
Jordan was filling his pleather-bound journal with "the best lyrics
[he'd] ever written."

Jordan and Adrienne took the name Jordan & The Sphinx only after they
moved "back home" to Donaldson, AR, to raise their daughter and be
closer to family. Adrienne came up with the moniker and it stuck. As a
husband/wife duo, they hosted a weekly open mic at the Caddo Valley
Canteen VFW Post 7516. Or, "the V" for short. They could be found
there every Wednesday, between 10pm and 4am, trying out new songs on
"a truly captive bar crowd."

The V was, and is, a smoke-stained, beer-drenched, bona fide den of
iniquity. Complete with a whole slue of shameless sinners packed
inside almost every night of the week. It's also a welcoming oasis in
the desert stretch of so called "dry counties" surrounding I-30
between Texarkana and Little Rock. There frat boys, old-timers,
whores, suspected whores, poolsharks, hicks, hippies, gangstas,
townies, cowboys, and folks of all stripes would congregate to quench
their collective thirst. That was the world in which Jordan & The
Sphinx lived. The way Jordan says it, "This music was conceived in
Knoxville and then born in our living room... but it started walking,
talking... at The V."

After incubating in the wastelands of rural Arkansas, Jordan & The
Sphinx turned into an electric guitar driven, southern fried four
piece with a decidely classic sound. Adrienne's dad, Travis, played
the drums and her half-brother, Justin, played bass. Travis' cousin,
David, had a home studio. So the band picked a few 'hits' and over a
period of three weeks recorded them. "A Week in My Mind" was one of
the songs. It has become a mainstay of the group's live shows.

But soon, Jordan and Adrienne "headed back East." With only some
clothes, their music and a hope for something still unknown, they
arrived in Durham, NC.

Here they've begun forming the next evolution of Jordan & The
Sphinx...

Sunday, May 16
