I agree that much of Facebook is preaching to the converted

That's not quite what I'm saying. Preaching to the converted is fine, and necessary, if by 'preaching' we mean 'hyping shows.' Those sites are well-designed to make it easy to reach other people on those sites with music and video and updates, no question about it. My point is that it's only preaching to *part* of the converted - or is preaching loudly to only a limited subset of a larger potential group of converts. The downside is that the insular nature of those sites (encouraged by profit-driven web design that's very deliberate in excluding people who don't buy in to the whole package) leads folks who play mainly at corporate social networking sites to start ignoring other communities that choose not to participate under those corporate umbrellas.

todd all of this seems pretty obvious actually it's not really in dispute is it morman
