Reaper is not free. It is distributed without crippling copy protection, which is not the same thing.

$50 for a personal use license is an amazing deal for software that looks for all the world to be just as good as anything else out there, if not better. I am currently budgeting for $225 for the commercial license next month sometime. That's less than a third the cost of Cubase and so far it seems to work better.

Between Reaper & Audacity you almost dont have to buy anything anymore except Plugins & loops. Alot of those are free too.
