---- WHAT'S NEW WITH AIFIA -- http://www.aifia.org ----

1. AIfIA 2004 ELECTIONS, NOMINATIONS NOW OPEN:
AIfIA will hold annual elections for the Board of Directors
during the last week in August 2004. The nomination process
has already begun. So far, the nominees include Peter
Boersma, Jess McMullin, Marcia Morante, and Peter Van Dijck.
You can submit nominations online, but hurry. The nomination
process ends August 9.

2. NEW MENTORING PROGRAM:
AIfIA members now have the chance to share experiences with
leaders in the field through the AIfIA’s new mentoring
program. Current and future information architects can be
mentored by experienced IAs. Mentors and mentees are asked
to complete a short survey, so they can be matched together
in a few weeks.

3. ANNUAL REPORT, 2003-2004:
As AIfIA’s second year comes to a close, we can look back to
see an organization that has grown beyond our early
expectations. The annual report is packed with information
about AIfIA projects, events, and finances, and you can read
it on the website.

-- BOXES AND ARROWS -- http://www.boxesandarrows.com/

Boxes and Arrows is having a design contest:
The editors feel it’s time to freshen up a bit, but because
they love the vibrant community that’s made them, they’re
holding a design contest. Submissions are accepted until
August 15th. Then a panel of celebrity judges (including
Andrei Herasimchuk, John Rhodes, Lou Rosenfeld, Nathan
Shedroff, and Jared Spool) will award the proud winner a set
of professional books from the fine publishers at PeachPit
Press (the parents to New Riders). Guidelines and additional
information can be found on the site.

Several good recent articles in the past month:

1) Innovation Extreme Makeover
(Robert Ouellette)
Extreme Makeover is an unlikely place to look for useful
insights into corporate innovation. Even the fat, awkward,
and, let’s face it, hideous bubble-era companies were not
going to improve their questionable bottom lines with a nose
job, liposuction, and tummy-tuck. In spite of that, the show
can offer some useful lessons when trying to understand the
dynamics of innovation.

2) Making Knowledge Management Work on your Intranet
(Shiv Singh)
In the information economy, the longevity of an organization
is based as much on the sophistication of its knowledge
management practices as it is on traditional differentiators
such as the strength of its products, the talent of its
employees, and its marketplace reputation and partner
relationships. Simply speaking, as actionable and insightful
information becomes the currency of an organization, there
are few other ways to tap into any latent potential lost in
the office corridors.

3) The Confidence Game
(Brian R. Krause)
How does a user interface designer know that a given design
will work? How does anybody develop enough confidence in a
design to move it toward the real world? The methods
designers use to evaluate user interfaces require training
and experience. But the people who need to hire designers
are unlikely to have those skills. How do the people who are
paying the bills know they are getting good answers?
