I don't know Emacs' xml mode well enough to know how it handles it. Probably it can't do this in real time, but only as an option. If so, it should be able to flag a warning due to unrecognized entity.

Alternatively, it could handle escaping, but that could go beyond basic text editing functionality. But hey, it's emacs, not a plain text editor? :-)

Maybe it is just best to think of Emacs as minimally xml aware, and perhaps accept the fact that if using it, one must do much more manual work than with xml editor.
