CAROLINA SOUL on the Thursday Night Feature, 9 p.m. to midnight:
Three hours of soul 45s from the Carolinas from the mid-1960s through the
early 1980s, with an emphasis on rarely heard gems from cities and towns
such as Columbia, Fayetteville, Florence, High Point, and Greensboro.
Sounds will range from deep ballads to heavy funk, sweet group soul, quiet
storm, clubby party tracks, and more.

SONGS OF THE COLD WAR on Hell or High Water, Sunday, 1-2 p.m.: This week's
show will explore musical reactions during the first decades of the Cold
War as well as the themes, threats, and fears of that anxious era. During
the 1940s and 50s, the newly ever-present threat of the atomic bomb served
as inspiration for a wide range of gospel, pop, country, blues, and rock
songs. While atomic energy became a metaphor on one hand for spiritual
reckoning (in songs like "Jesus Hits Like the Atom Bomb" and "God's
Fallout Shelter"), in other songs the bomb symbolized explosive sexual
potency and unbridled rock-and-roll. Besides surveying the wealth of
bomb-inspired classics and rarities, we'll take on other issues,
landmarks, and leaders of the Cold War, with singers/musicians Carson
Robinson ("I'm No Communist"), Floyd Tillman ("This Cold War with You"),
and many more.
