[TFDA] do something to help inner city kids without leaving your computer or spending a dime

Below is a note from my college roommate, who now teaches math in inner city
schools in Oakland, CA and coaches track/cross-country in her free time. To
help fundraise for the track team (some of her students are too poor to buy
their own spikes), she has applied for a Nike community improvement grant,
which is decided by the number of internet votes their organization
receives. All you have to do is go
here<http://www.nikebackyourblock.com/ApplicantProfile.aspx?ApplicantId=835f89d7-e339-4b7a-8efc-5e6d1449ee52>
and
vote for them; then click on a link Nike sends to confirm that your email
address is real. Please take a minute to help them out.
Thanks,
Jen Weaver
Dear friends:
I hope everyone is enjoying their summer and doing many fun/exciting things.
Despite the long days, it feels like June and July have passed so quickly.
School supplies are already on sale and plans for next school year appear
more frequently in my inbox. I have tried to use the down time to my
advantage, helping to prepare the Castlemont Track and Cross Country program
for another successful year. Monday through Friday, and even Saturday
sometimes, I coach the cross-country team. This year we have over 40
student athletes and several alumni who are in town this summer. When I
first started to develop the distance program two years ago, there were 4 to
5 runners. Now I have to beg friends to help drive kids up to the hills for
a run. An unfortunate reality of our location, running on the streets is
not always enjoyable or safe.
During the day I am writing grants to improve the team’s financial
situation. Schools across the country are cutting athletic budgets as state
governments struggle with the recession. Even before budget cuts Castelmont
High School, in East Oakland, was rarely able to make ends meet. The
majority of students cannot afford running shoes or spikes; so free shoes
need to be provided for them.
The track and cross-country team total support over 100 student athletes.
The kids are amazing. They work extremely hard and the majority go on to
college—some even to run/jump/throw. They have won several invitational and
were the Oakland league champions for both girls and boys track and field.
If you could take 30 seconds and click the link below, your vote could help
out the team. Nike is offering grant money to the application with the most
votes. All you need to do is enter you email and then confirm in your email
box. Please use every email address that you have. We were in 2nd place
just last night and suddenly moved to 4th in 24 hours. We are only 75
votes out of first and 50 votes from second. Feel free to pass this message
along to your friends and family.
If you have already voted, thank you so much!
I have also included a short article about East Oakland.
Thank you!
