NEW PHASE OF CARY PARK REDUCES ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACTS, INCLUDES TOWN'S FIRST DISC GOLF COURSE
Public invited to dedication and weekend of events

CARY, NC - On September 13, 2008 at 10 a.m., everyone is invited to celebrate the official dedication of the second phase of Cary's Middle Creek School Park, which includes the Town's first 18-hole disc golf course and makes extensive use of reclaimed water indoors and out. The second phase of the 105-acre park adds a lighted multi-purpose athletic field encircled by a greenway trail, a playground, picnic shelter, restrooms, two new ticket booths at the existing softball complex, additional parking and a maintenance building. The park is located at 151 Middle Creek Park Avenue is southeastern Cary.

"Middle Creek School Park supports our mission of maintaining parks and recreation facilities that assure quality leisure opportunities and respond to the recreation needs of our residents," says Dwayne Jones, recreation manager. "Whether you run, walk, play tennis or a field sport, want to host a picnic, or have children who just want to play, Middle Creek School Park allows you to do all of that and more."

Middle Creek School Park is notable not only for its high quality recreation facilities but also for the Town's efforts to reduce its environmental impact and maintenance. It uses reclaimed water for irrigation as well as for flushing toilets. Rubberized surfaces under play equipment eliminate the need for mulch, which would require replacement annually. Lawn was limited to athletic fields and the play areas, and all other areas disturbed during construction were naturalized. The athletic field lighting system requires 50 percent less energy to operate and has less off-site spill and glare. Also, the system can be operated remotely via the Internet, precluding the need for staff to travel to the site to operate the lights.

To celebrate the opening of the second phase, throughout the weekend a number of sporting events will take place at both the new and existing phases of Middle Creek School Park. Cary Pop Warner will host regular football games starting at 2 p.m. on Saturday, September 13. That same day, the National Softball Association will host games throughout the day at both the Middle Creek softball complex and Thomas Brooks Park softball complex. In conjunction with the dedication of Cary's first disc golf facility, Middle Creek School Park will host the North Carolina Disc Championships -- the longest running statewide disc championships in the United States. In addition to disc golf, players will compete in a number of field events unique to disc golf. The tournament will run throughout the weekend of September 12-14. Spectators are encouraged to come out and support some of North Carolina's top disc athletes.

Appropriations to date for phases I and II of the park total $8,571,900, and plans for the park include a third phase.

For more information about the park, include site and area maps, visit Middle Creek School Park at http://www.townofcary.org/depts/prdept/parks/middle.htm or call (919) 469 4061.

In case of rain, the dedication will be cancelled.
