[TFDA] Stop stretching already!

Please take this with a grain of salt. Most of you will know this already but I want to reiterate for those that do not know and will not read this article thoroughly.

Stretching is not bad but the key is how to stretch.

BAD- stretching hard to the point of discomfort before doing something rigorous like ultimate.

GOOD- light stretching(not to the point of discomfort) and/or warm-ups that will simulate what you do in a game.
The key here is simulate what you will do in a game such as twisting of the hips, shoulders, and back in throws and cutting.

One thing that will increase the likely hood of injury is inadequate stretching like simply jogging around the field. So just because NYtimes says, "stretching is bad" does not mean warming-up is bad. I know I have been guilty of this in the past because maybe I was running late and yet only 7 people showed up for a league game. Problem here is your muscles and ligaments are not at their baseline level for activity thus increasing the likely hood of a tear on the first play of the game.

Good stretching will in fact increase balance and knee proprioception(awareness of movement and position) where as bad stretching decreases reaction time and movement time.

Let me know if you have any questions,
Yin
