Texas Pete over Smurfs: ummm, Tasty!
After a nine-week schedule, which featured a grudge-match Saturday and a Saturday with matches to
tweak the seedings, the finals standings had Jon Boldings Skin-Tight Smurfs atop the standings
with an 8-1 record.
Standings, with records and captains listed:
1. Skin-Tight Smurfs 8-1 (Jon Bolding/Julie Morris)
2. Your Mama Wears Yellow Boots 5-4 (Joey Saba/Eric Martin)
3. Happy Ending 5-4 (Carla Haslauer/Casey Theriot)
4. Gordon Lightfoot 5-4 (David Cesa/Lauren Gardner)
5. McLovin 4-5 (Victor Maneilly/Christian Schwoerke)
6. Blackdraft 3-6 (Grant and Heather Gardner)
7. Spunk 3-6 (Alison Murray/Brian Brickhouse)
8. Texas Pete 3-6 (Garrett Dyer/Katie Irons)
These standings created the following two pools for Saturdays round of games:
Pool A Pool B
Smurfs Yellow Boots
Happy Ending Gordon Lightfoot
Blackdraft McLovin
Texas Pete Spunk
The tourneys games were all first-to-15, with the exception of the finals on Sunday, which was a
game to 15, win by 2, hardcap 19. With rounds of two hours, the time cap came on at 1:45, adding
one more point to the score needing to be attained at point. These were all concessions to the
heat, ensuring everyone survived and enjoyed the competition.
Results of round-robin play in Pool A totally flipped the pool, as the Smurfs went 0-3 and Texas
Pete swept its three games. To complete the upheaval, Blackdraft compiled a 2-1 record and Happy
Ending had to be satisfied with a 1-2 finish to the day. Meanwhile in Pool B, Gordon Lightfoot
showed its Canadian soul and went 3-0, upsetting Yellow Boots in the last round. Spunk showed
some of its namesake virtue in beating hapless one-name McLovin in that same final round to wrest
the third spot with a 1-2 record.
Pool play records for Saturday:
Pool A Pool B
Smurfs (0-3) Yellow Boots (2-1)
Happy Ending (1-2) Gordon Lightfoot (3-0)
Blackdraft (2-1) McLovin (0-3)
Texas Pete (3-0) Spunk (1-2)
Game by game results of pool play:
Pool A
Blackdraft over Smurfs 11-10
Texas Pete over Happy Ending 15-9
Texas Pete over Smurfs 15-7
Blackdraft over Happy Ending 15-10
Happy Ending over Smurfs 11-5
Texas Pete over Blackdraft 15-12
Pool B
Yellow Boots over McLovin 14-13
Gordon Lightfoot over Spunk 15-12
Yellow Boots over Spunk 14-9
Gordon Lightfoot over McLovin 15-8
Gordon Lightfoot over Yellow Boots 14-11
Spunk over McLovin 14-13
These results set up quarters thus:
Yellow Boots v. Happy Ending
Texas Pete v. McLovin
Gordon Lightfoot v. Smurfs
Blackdraft v. Spunk
The Sunday elimination games were all hard-fought, and the scores simply cant show how much grit
and effort were involved (ie, no team dominated with error-free play, and every team applied
strong defensive pressure).
Quarters results:
Yellow Boots over Happy Ending 14-10
Texas Pete over McLovin 14-9
Smurfs over Gordon Lightfoot 14-13
Blackdraft over Spunk 14-13
In the two 14-13 games, Blackdraft held on to win after a determined Spunk caught up from a
6-point deficit to challenge the Gardners black-shirted squad, while Smurfs came from a shorter
distance behind to finally catch up and edge Gordon Lightfoot.
Semis pitted Texas Pete and Yellow Boots, which proved to be a hotly contested game, with players
from both sides making strong defensive bids, laying out and often making argument-inducing
contact. Final results put the sauce up over the footwear, 12-9. In the other game, a battle
royale was underway by the time the cap came on, as the Smurfs came from a 4-point deficit to
whittle away at Blackdrafts lead, taking them to universe point, where Blackdraft could not hold
onto the disc, allowing the Smurfs to gain possession and the final score, 12-11.
The finals was a tourney rematch of Smurfs and Texas Pete, where in the previous days encounter
the little blue critters were over-spiced, 15-7. The Smurfs were retooled on Sunday, however, and
their primary player, Hayden Sewell, showed up to play a strong offensive game (largely throwing
the scoring huck time and again). Of note was a personnel change for the Smurfs: in place of Jon
and Mel Proctor, the Veits (Bobby and Lee) stepped up during the day and made crucial O and D
plays to keep the Smurfs alive. Texas Pete relied on Garrett Dyers direction and aggressive
offense, which largely revolved around himself, Chris Shepard, Lesley McCormack, and a relative
unknown in the area, Tom Pearl. Texas Pete seemed the deeper team on paper, with several other
players in the wings, including Marty Schlesinger, Kenn Davis, and Wes Hunt (though he was out
with an injury).
Sideline speculation had Texas Pete run up a score similar to the previous days, especially with
the Smurfs coming off their second universe-point game to reach the finals. Texas Pete got the
first goal, but each traded thereafter till 3s, when Texas Pete went on a 4-point run, making it
7-3, giving fuel to those predicting a blowout. The Smurfs dug down, however, and after a point
that lasted 3 turnovers apiece, Texas Pete called for a time out. This maneuver worked in favor
of the Smurfs, as they then reeled off 3 points to make it 7s. Texas Pete finally took half, 8-7,
but it appeared that the sauce was losing some of its vigor.
In the second half, the Smurfs struck first, tying the game at 8s. Texas Pete answered, then the
Smurfs ran off 3 to go ahead for the first time, 11-9. Texas Pete answered with a run of 2 to tie
it, and then each team began to trade, with Smurfs reaching 14, Pete tying it, sending the game
into overtime. Both teams bore down for #15, but Texas Pete scored, putting them on the brink.
The Smurfs came back with their own #15, and it looked like the game might go on to the bitter
end, hardcap 19. The sidelines were already more than satisfied with the 2+ hours of play.
At 15s, Texas Pete took the pull and moved the disc upfield, uncontested, giving themselves the
lead and game point, 16-15. Playing D, Texas Pete was able to wrest the disc from the Smurfs and
score with a simple pass for the 17-15 tourney win. Grant and Heather Gardner (captains of last
years winners, Montoyas Revenge), presented the Gail Grail to the exuberant Texas Pete team.
