Christmas colors prevailed at the first Triangle tourney of 2008, with a Stephen Poulos’ Red
rolling over Taylor Pope’s Green in the finals 9-3, a score that exactly complemented their first-
game results, five rounds earlier.

The day began with some light winds (that got stronger and gustier as the day progressed), 40-ish
degree temperatures (rising to nearly 50), and a clear sky. Players began to assemble at the
Cedar Forks fields in Morrisville about 9:15, with each team mustering a starting 7 by 9:30.
Games began 10 minutes later.

With each game a short battle to 9 in 1-hour rounds, teams had to come out early with the
strongest defense and surest offense they could muster. Red did not get the memo in the first
round, and they succumbed to green 3-9, while the other first round games were decided by a single
goal. Four rounds later, round-robin standings produced the following:

Green 4-1
White 3-2
Red 3-2
Glue 3-2
Black 2-3
Yellow 0-5

Of note in the final round was Green’s acquiescence to Blue. One of their players had not shown
up all day, and his absence had the 4-0 team fatigued, ready to rest during the final round so
that the team could come out strong in the semis. Thus, Blue was able to eke out its third
victory to put them in a 3-way tie with White and Red, both of them having beaten Blue.

Of further note was that the semis round (which included the consolation game for Black and
Yellow) was an exact re-match of the games played in the previous round. Thus Blue (4) matched up
again with Green (1), and White (2) faced off against Red (3) for a second time.

The previous matchup with Black and Yellow had the former team win by 2 goals; in the consolation
game--with Mick Ribault of Yellow and Lindsey Hack and Raj Prasad of Black dropping out--the
result was still a 2-goal difference, with Black again the victor, 9-7.

In the semis games, previous round results were reversed. White had run Red ragged for a 7-4
victory in the previous round, but in the semis matchup, Red’s forces regrouped behind Stephen
Poulos, Daniel Dayton, Melanie Morgan, and Tim Sannes to overcome White’s Kris Bass, Rob
Sayre-McCord, Chris Shepard, and Leslie McCormack, 9-5.

The other semis game had the same result, a reversal of the previous round. This one was harder
fought, however, with Blue’s larger number of subs rotating in frequently to wear down the shorter
Green rotation. Green, behind strong play from Taylor Pope, Dan Snoke, Sharon Tucker, and Brian
Lang, took the half 5-2. Blue resolved for the new year and final half of the game to run harder
and to score at least 2 for every goal from their opponent. Nan Gao, playing with a right
shoulder injured in the first round, led the Blue forces: Hayden Sewell, Lauren Gardner, Baker
Pratt, Josh Murphy, and a host of others still ready to run. Blue inched its way back into the
game, reeling off 3 goals to bring it to 5-5. From this point forward, the game see-sawed with
Green going up 8-7. Blue again tied the score at 8-8, then put out its strongest D line, with
Baker on Taylor, Lauren on Sharon, Nan on Tim, etc., with Hayden playing a loose deep defense on
Green’s pickup player Cody (visiting from Iowa). Green ran a string, getting the third pass to
Taylor, pinned up against the sideline, with Baker forcing a flick. Taylor, however, faked just
enough to allow a strong pivot to the break side, from which he launched a low, long pass that
arrived in Cody’s hands before Hayden could close the gap.

It was to prove a pyrrhic victory for Green, as they were more depleted than formerly and they
faced in the finals a Red squad that had seemed to gain fire. While the points were contested--
with multiple possessions by both sides--Red recovered and controlled the disc more often, taking
half at 5-1, then allowing only 2 more Green goals before ending the finals 9-3 to win the
Triangle’s first tourney of 2008.

Consolation results:

Black over Yellow 9-7

Semis results:

Red over White 9-5
Green over Blue 9-8

Finals results:

Red over Green 9-3
