Dusty, you make some really good points there.
I won't be able to play this Spring league but personally I think that
changing the format to a core-based one is a fantastic idea!
Let me explain -
In other cities, leagues have several formats, such as BYOT where you bring
your own team (or sign up without a team and get placed on a team of other
'stragglers'); Core-based - pretty much what is proposed here; and the well
known 'random-buddy-sign-up' which is what we've had here all along.
Each has advantages and disadvantages -
BYOT - disadvantage: it can result in some super stacked teams whooping up
on 'pick up' teams (though it can be resolved with having two levels of
divisions) . advantage: you get to play with all your friends and no unknows
(unless you're on a straggler team).
Random-buddy-sign-up - disadvantage: you won't know who is on your team and
may get stuck on a horrible squad or with players you dislike (like that
ever happens!). advantage: it's seemingly more fair and you get to play with
random people.
Core-based: is really a combination of the first two so the the advantages
and disadvantages from the first two might both apply, but at the same time
both the disadvantages and advantages are definitely diminished.
Having played in all three types of leagues, I am a huge fan of the
core-based league system. I personally think it's the better format because
if you ever wanted to play with a group of friends - you can form your core
and not be limited to just one buddy. If you are not on a core, it is not
really different than the regular league from your point of view - you may
still have your buddy and you still get drafted on some team where you'll be
a random draftee.
Either way, I think it's a great idea to at least try it out and see what
people think.
