We used to have it set up that way, but we changed it to reduce the
number of extraneous and off-topic posts. When you have 600+
subscribers with varying levels of tolerance for extra email, it's a
good idea to take this kind of step, and I think it benefits most of
us. We want people to make a conscious decision before sending an
email to a large number of people and will end up on the web (Google
and other search engines spider our archives).
By the way, while the move to "non-members posts are subject to
moderation" has slowed down mail delivery for a few posts, I think
it's worked pretty well for the most part. Many people whose posts
get caught in the moderation queue are added to an exceptions list
that lets them post from their alternate addresses without subscribing
multiple times, and most of those posts are only delayed for a few
hours to over-night. Over the past few months, spams have been
increasing (we see between 2-10/day) and this has prevented them from
hitting your inbox.
There have been some rare occasions when all three moderators (Xian,
Garrett and myself) have been out of town, and that has caused some
additional lag.
