Post-Turkey Day Friday 2007 was considerably cooler than the previous day, with temperatures
hovering in the high 40s and a cool, 10 mph breeze pushing stray clouds through a crisply blue,
sunny sky. The four random teams appeared at the Cedar Forks fields in rag tag fashion, one by
one, but all ready to play within 10 minutes of the official 9:30 start time.
The tourney format had the teams do a round robin first, followed with a semis and finals game
(with a consolation provided for the losers of semis). Black came out of the gate with a rush,
and it came in at the end of round-robin play with a 3-0 record, nudging aside White in the first
round 13-4, slowing in the middle stretch with a victory over Red 10-8, then sprinting to the
finish with a 13-3 victory over Blue. Red was no slouch either, as it gained ground over Blue
13-7, narrowly losing to Black, then regaining its stride to surge past White 12-5. White came
back from a slow start in the first round to beat Blue in the second round, 13-9. Blue never
gained traction, despite a roster full of skilled players.
Results at the end of pool play:
Black 3-0
Red 2-1
White 1-2
Blue 0-3
Semis are typically a 1 v 4 and 2 v 3 affair, but this would have repeated the final round of pool
play, hence it was decided to switch the match-ups, 1 v 3 and 2 v 4.
Black was favored to take down White again, as they had in their first round game, but White had
very different plans, running off 4 points in a row before Black took a time out to regroup. The
time out had no effect, and White ran off 3 more points to take half at 7-0. While Black huddled
up to talk about karma, thanks, and how wonderful a comeback would be, White simply prepared to
apply more pressure. Black got the first point after half, then lost the next to make it 1-8.
Black ran off 5 in a row to make it 6-8, but the Black lost its footing and gave up 4 in a row to
make it 6-12. One more point for each team sealed the game, White over Black 13-7.
The other semi game went according to seed, with Blue posting 8 points to Reds 13.
Semis results:
White over Black 13-7
Red over Blue 13-8
While Blue and Black played a consolation game to 9, which Black only won at universe point, 9-8,
White and Red battled in the Finals on the adjacent field.
Whites Alex Trahey, Wes Hunt, Marc Kessler, Hayden Sewell, and Becki Cleveland kept White in the
game, point after point, with strong support from Kevin Calcagno and injury replacement Jason (of
UTx, who came in for BJ Witkin AND Steve Hall). White kept the game close in the first half,
going down 5-7, but they could not keep up in the second half, as Red dominated, taking the game
13-7. Most teams this day used a poachy D to trap then clog the lanes and the dump spots: Red did
this particularly well, forcing numerous errant throws to gain possession. While Red was not
necessarily flawless with their offense, they had the legs to again regain possession, with Lesley
McCormack, Chris Shepard, Baker Pratt, and Jeff Faulkner keeping the disc alive.
Finals result:
Red over White 13-7
At the conclusion of Finals, both teams were awarded discs. The tourney brought in over $650 for
the ultiplex fund.
