Trouble Overcomes Yellers for Spring League Ultimate Frisbee Bliss Cup
Orange County Recreation and Parks second annual Ultimate Spring League again featured six teams playing a two-month schedule over the course of March and April, with a two-day, season-ending tourney May 5 and 6.
At the end of the regular season, with all games played on Saturdays, at 10am and 12pm, Victor Maneillys Trouble stood atop the standings with a 5-3 record, tied, however, with Jeff Faulkners Big Green Pleasure Machine and Abe Crystal and Zemo Trevathans ForScore team. Noah Wichmans Yellers were in fourth place, with Katherine Bliss and Tommy Schoplers Red and DiShon Cains Blue holding fifth and sixth place.
Reguar season standings:
Black 5-3
Green 5-3
White 5-3
Yellow 4-4
Red 3-5
Blue 2-6
The two-day tourney began on a drizzly Saturday, with games played on three fields, at the Elfand Cheeks park and at the Bliss field, less than a mile away. The plan had been to play a round-robin with all six teams, spanning both days, then have the top four teams go into semis and finals. At the end of Saturday, after the first four games of the five-game round robin had been played, Black was atop the heap once more, with a 4-0 record.
Saturday tourney results:
Black 4-0
Green 3-1
White 3-1
Yellow 2-2
Blue 1-3
Red 0-4
Blues team was unable to field enough uninjured personnel on Sunday, and the captain withdrew his squad from further contention. Additionally, Red was mathematically eliminated, and the co-captains decided to withdraw. The planned Yeller-Big Green Pleasure Machine matchup was dropped from the schedule, and the remaining four teams went straight into semis on Sunday morning.
While all round-robin games had been to 13, the elimination games were to 15 in two-hour rounds. Big Green Pleasure Machine was paired with Trouble on field one and Yellers faced off against ForScore on field two. These were rematches from the previous days final round, where Trouble and ForScore had at that time been the victors. Machine took the lead early, but after the half, which theyd taken 8-6, they could not hold back the relentless scoring from Troubles Lesley McCormack, Chris Shepard, and Alex Trahey, and Trouble surged to a time-capped 12-10 victory. On the other side, ForScores hard-fought 15-13 victory on the previous day was avenged by a stronger, more refreshed Yeller, which handed them a 15-8 drubbing.
The finals were not capped, and the two-hour round could not contain this marathon two-hour, 35-minute struggle. The first four points of the game, for instance, took 30 minutes, as each team played tenacious defense and every player gave his or her best effort to maintain possession for an eventual score. Saturdays drizzling, sputtering bouts of rain had transformed on Sunday to a steady wind of about 15-mph, coursing obliquely across the field, making it difficult for either side to take advantage as the plastic disc was typically sent skittering after its propulsive force waned and the wind took control.
Both teams were tied 7-7, poised to take half, but the honors eventually went to Trouble, 8-7. After 10 minutes of half-time, the game resumed, but the fight seemed to have left the Yellers, and they could not get back on the board till after Trouble had run off three points, going up 11-7. Yellers finally roused themselves, though relying constantly on players already exhausted from their short rotation. Each point featured only one or two new faces, and stalwarts such as Jessie Peed and Troy Revell played every point for the Yellers. Trouble had a deeper roster, but till this point, theyd also maintained a lid on which five men and two women were going to be on the field. With the lead so solid, Trouble cautiously opened up its rotation.
Yellers took advantage and scored two, to make it 9-11. Both teams then traded points, each gaining possession at least once during the ensuing points, testament both to the defense and to the difficult throwing conditions. At 13-11, the Yellers were receiving the pull, and if they held serve, they would be within one goal. Both teams sensed that this was the pivotal moment, a last-ditch chance for the Yellers to overcome the odds.
Yellers moved the disc to midfield, each pass hotly contested. Troy sent a shot deep to Kirk Willmarth, just short of the endzone. The defense swarmed the endzone, preventing any easy pass, and Kirk sent the disc laterally to a waiting teammate, but Troubles Corey Hatch knocked the disc to the ground, giving Trouble possession and the eventual score. At 11-14, Yellers were drained of hope, too fatigued to find the resources to battle back, and another faltering attempt on O gave Trouble another possession and an easy score for the tourney and possession of the leagues Bliss Cup.
Congratulations to the members of Trouble for their season-long dominance!

Spirit winners:
Each teams captain presented a special disc to the player they deemed the most spirited, inspirational either for play or attitude, or both. Presentations were made by the captains in their own words:
Green: for our spirit disc I awarded the prize to a couple, Mike Kkelly and his wife, Mo.
Mike plays with an inspired intensity, and Mo was playing in her first competitive ultimate games. After several years of watching from the sidelines, she finally ventured onto the field. She did a fine job, and it was great having both of them on the team.
Red: we awarded our disc to Tristan Greene for his great efforts and great attitude towards the game, opponents, and teammates.
White: One went to Niko Harlan, who showed the most learning and improvement over the season, and also uttered two of the loudest profanities we heard all season (both very well timed!). And watch him, hes a rugby player/coach on the side!
The other went to Patrick Peterson, whose contagious energy provided a spark all season with such spontaneous celebrations as IVE GOT THE HUCK! and who gave new meaning to the term taking one for the team (but I will have to leave that to your imaginations, unless you want to ask him!).
Black: "Trouble's" Spirit Award went to Libby Manly for playing savage for part of the tourney on an ankle that looked like a python that just swallowed a French poodle. (For the record, the rumors that were flying around that she was a wildcat in the sack had absolutely no influence on her winning this prestigious honor.) And that kind of information is really none of my business anyhow.
Yellow: The spirit disc for the Yellers went to Genevieve Ricart. She came to every game with an upbeat positive attitude, even when playing savage. She always played at 100% and definitely improved her game over the course of the season.
Blue: My team and I chose Anne Farrari, whom we chose because she was at nearly every game. She was a newbie but picked up concepts and learned the game on the fly. She totally improved in every aspect. As a team, we are very proud of her accomplishments.

Notes
Any non-marking defender contact resulting in a turnover counts as a 'D'. If the D occurs on a good throw, the thrower is not charged with a 'to'. 'PB' however, is also a to for the thrower. A 'to' and a 'x' never occurs on the same play, always one or the other. Some Yellow players might notice I didn't tally a 'M' stat this time.
