Last weekend at Cardinal Gibbons High School, the North Carolina High School
State Championships took place. Six teams were in attendance to compete for
the title of State Champion.
Saturday commenced with pool play, as usual. The first round featured
started strong with good match-ups. Cardinal Gibbons High School walked
away victorious over Jordan High School, 12 - 9. Jordan fought a hard game,
and played exceptionally well for only having one sub. CHUF started off
their day with a win over Page High School (from Greensboro), 13 - 2.
Northwood High School (from Pittsboro), a new team to the ultimate scene,
opened with a victory over Ravenscroft, 13 - 1. Round Two opened with a
surprising upset, Northwood beat Cardinal Gibbons 13 - 7. Cardinal Gibbons
just could not get their defense going, and could not stop Northwood's
athletic players. In CHUF verses Jordan, CHUF walked away with the win, 12
- 4. Jordan seemed to run out of steam, with only 8 players. Page got
their first victory over Ravenscroft 13 - 1.
Round Three began with Cardinal Gibbons beating Ravenscroft 13 - 0.
Ravenscroft just couldn't seem to get an offense going, probably because of
the fairly constant wind. CHUF beat Northwood solidly, 13 - 4. Northwood
couldn't hang for long against CHUF's zone defense. Also, Page racked in
another win verses Jordan who was exhausted after playing two extremely
tough games. Page won 13 - 10. For Saturday's final round, CHUF beat out
Gibbons 13 - 5. CHUF continued to play their game, and Gibbons couldn't
seem to get anything going. Northwood beat out Page 13 - 7. And
Ravenscroft forfeited their final game to Jordan. Ravenscroft had been
playing Savage all day, and wanted to save up for Sunday.
Sunday began with the final game of pool play. Gibbons barely pulled out a
victory over Page, with the time cap cutting the game short. Final Score
was 9 - 6. CHUF beat Ravenscroft 13 - 2. And Jordan was forced for forfeit
(due to lack of players) to Northwood. Round one of bracket play started
with Page vs Jordan. Jordan was once again forced to forfeit, and so Page
advanced to play CHUF in the Semi-Finals. On the other side of the bracket,
Gibbons beat Ravenscroft 13 - 3. Ravenscroft played hard, but the wind was
devastating to their offense. Gibbons advanced to play Northwood in the
Semi-Finals.
Jordan beat out Ravenscroft in a 5 vs 5 game for 5th place (final score: 13
- 10). The semi-finals began with CHUF vs Page. Page played a hard fought
game, but CHUF's defense and conservative offense, made it tough for Page to
score. CHUF advanced to the finals, 10 - 1. Gibbons verses Northwood was
an extremely tight game. Both teams battled for upwind points, with both
teams taking the advantage at least twice each. With the game tied at 7's,
the time cap went on, making it Universe point. Gibbons was on offense down
wind. Gibbons worked the disc two thirds of the field, when an off throw
was carried into the ground. Northwood quickly transitioned and managed to
get a huck most of the distance of the field, where they put it in to win, 8
- 7. Gibbons would play Page again in the bracket for third, but were
exhausted after their loss to Northwood. Page took 3rd place.
The Finals consisted of Northwood High School and Chapel Hill High School.
CHUF started off strong taking a 3 to 1 lead, when Lucas Darden pulled his
hamstring, and was forced to the sideline. From there, both teams continued
to score points, with CHUF holding a small lead for most of the game. CHUF
took half 7-5. Northwood came out of the second half extremely fired up,
came back then took the lead. CHUF could not recover, and Northwood won
their first tournament, and the State Championship 13 - 11. CHUF took
Second, and Cardinal Gibbons ended up taking home the spirit award.
Congratulations to Northwood High School, and all teams involved. It has
been a excellent season, and we can't wait to see everyone again next year.
On a side note: Sorry for getting this out a few days late. I've had exams
all week, and haven't had time to think, much less write a write-up.
