To all those interested in how this past weekends high school tournament
went. I've put together a write up. I would have gotten it out sooner, but
I've been sick.
Unfortunately, two teams were short players at the beginning of Saturday.
Both Jordan High School and Ravenscroft High School could only muster 5
players each. Jordan decided to play all of their games 5v7, and
Ravenscroft forfeited their games by playing several college players for
experience.
The first game that took place was Fuquay-Varina High School verses Jordan
High School. Using a zoney defense, and Thomas Sayre-McCord's size, Jordan
was able to keep the game close, despite being severely outnumbered.
Fuquay-Varina played a very consistent game as well, and took full advantage
of the poaches whenever possible. The final score was 13-8 in favor of
Fuquay. The Garner High verses Carolina Friends game featured an unexpected
upset. Garner High School came out fired up and ready to play, and pulled
out a win verses Carolina Friends (final score 9 - 7). CHUF accepted a
forfiet from Ravenscroft, but the Ravenscroft team actually played quite
well, and was very efficient with the disc (only the recorded score was
kept, 13 - 0f ). In the second round Carolina Friends showed their teeth,
and pulled out a universe point victory over Page High School (out of
Greensboro) (final score 9 - 8). Cardinal Gibbons started the day with a
game verses Garner High, and both teams came ready to play. The wind had
begun to pick up at this point though, and Garner just couldn't move the
disc as effectively as normal. Cardinal Gibbons won 11- 2. In the Jordan
verses Ravenscroft game, Ravenscroft again used college players, to have
more fun and get the most out of their day. Jordan accepted the forfeit.
With the wind, most teams couldn't move the disc as effectively as they
would have liked. The fields experienced a nearly constant 10-20 mph winds
in one direction or another. This had bearing on the rest of the games
played. Gibbons defeated Page in 12 - 2. Page played well, but had trouble
with the wind. In the Jordan verses CHUF game, Jordan managed to pull out
four points, but couldn't keep up being short on numbers (final 11-4).
Fuquay accepted Ravenscroft's forfeit, and a scrimmage was played using
college players. The Ravenscroft team did very well, but lacks the
experience to try and play short on numbers, like Jordan could (final
13-0f). In the Garner High verses Page matchup, Garner just could not keep
their offense moving. Turnovers and some exceptional defensive plays, won
the game for Page (11-3). In the final round, CHUF matched up verses
Fuquay-Varina. Fuquay came out ready to leave it all on the field. CHUF
took half 7-5, after a several point run by Fuquay. CHUF pulled out the
win, but Fuquay showed that even CHUF could be defeated. Saturday ended
with a match up between Cardinal Gibbons and Carolina Friends. In the first
half, friends managed to keep the score close, but after some amazing layout
D's, Friends couldn't keep up (final 11-5).
Sunday started with the unfortunate realization that both Ravenscroft and
Jordan were once again short on players. Ravenscroft was up against Garner
first, and played the game. Ravenscroft used a 1-3-1 zone defense, that
slowed Garner down quite a bit. Ravenscroft managed to keep the game
extremely close, and almost pulled out the big win (7-5). Page verses
Fuquay was a well played game by both teams. Page couldn't keep up with
Fuquay's offense, and couldn't get a flow going on defense. Fuquay won the
game 12-7. Jordan, exhausted from Saturday, decided to forfeit their first
game verses Cardinal Gibbons, and just play a scrimmage using a few college
players. Garner couldn't keep up with CHUF in their game. CHUF won 13-2.
Fuquay faced off verses CHUF in the second round. CHUF brought out more of
their players, including Lucas Darden, and Fuquay was exhausted from a tough
schedule on Saturday. Fuquay managed to score a point, but overall CHUF was
much more prepared for Sunday (final 13 - 1).
The finals consisted of Cardinal Gibbons High School verses Chapel Hill High
School (CHUF). Gibbons played their worst game of the weekend, featuring at
least 10 end zone drops and at least 5 stall nine punts. CHUF played a calm
consistent offense, and took full advantage of Gibbon's inconsistent
offense. On several points, Gibbons would catch the pull, and drop the disc
within the first 3 throws. CHUF would capitalize quickly on these
turnovers, and score. CHUF took half 8-0. Gibbons came out determined in
the second half, and managed to avoid the silly turnovers, endzone drops
were still a huge factor, and prevented a closer game. The second half
featured much longer points, and several turnovers. The final score was 13
- 1.
CHUF took home first the first place trophy, Gibbons took home second, and
Fuquay took third. Jordan won the spirit award, by a large margin, mostly
for playing Saturday short on players, and still playing to win.
Congratulations goes out to these teams, and Thank You's go out to all those
that attended; players, coaches, moderators, and spectators.
Overall, the entire weekend was a HUGE success, many great games were
played, and a lot of fun was had by all.
Thanks again to everyone involved!
