Snow Leopards Cant Manage TX Heat
This past Sunday, January 28, Alison Murrays Ill Mess with TX squad whupped up on LT Tompsons
Winston-Salem-based Snow Leopards, 7-3, to take home bragging rights in the 6th Annual Savage
Seven Benefit Tourney.
This years edition of Tim and Thuy Brooks benefit tourney (again earning $1000 for TFDAs
Ultiplex fund) featured 12 teams vying for little more than the opportunity to survive 7 games to
7, without ever being able to call on a sub to catch ones breath or quell cramping muscles.
With 12 teams playing on only 5 fields, the tourney format had the 12 teams compose 2 pools of 6,
requiring a round-robin of 5 games, before commencing elimination rounds in 3 different divisions.
After pool play, the top 2 teams in each pool vied for tourney honors, while the next 2 teams in
each pool sought the B-division crown, and the last 4 sought solace in having additional chances
to scratch out victories in the C-division.
The day began early at Carys Davis Drive fields, with teams already pulling to commence games at
9:30am. Every 45 minutes a new round began, all the way through to the finals. The day began
pleasantly, with unseasonably warm temperatures and a clear sky and mild breeze. As the day
progressed, the clouds began to roll in, the wind increase, and the temperature drop, making for a
drear backdrop for the A-Div finals.
After pool play, standings in each pool were like this:
A B
Catfight 5-0 Throw, Flow, Cut Your Throat 4-1
Ill Mess with TX 3-2 Snow Leopards 4-1
Everyone Loves Little Spoon 2-3 Pets 3-2
C-City Allstars 2-3 Dragnet 2-3
Staring at the Sun 2-3 Pimento Mori 2-3
Make it Funky 0-5 Chapeau 0-5
The B-Div semis had Little Spoon face off against Dragnet, and C-City Allstars pitted against
Pets. The Pets, helmed by Lesley McCormack, were able to romp over Rocky Paynes All Stars
unheeled, winning 6-2. Larry Durgins Little Spoon slipped past Dragnet, thumping Anne Burroughs
squad 7-2. In the B-Div finals, Pets and Spoons did a nursery rhyme dance, with the exuberant
Spoons winning 7-3.
Meanwhile, in the C-Division semis, Pimento Mori contended with Make it Funky, and Staring at the
Sun dealt with Chapeau. Blinded or not, Joe Kinnarneys Staring at the Sun crew was able to edge
the last-minute, randomly formed Chapeau team, 6-4. Dwayne Purpers Pimento Mori was able to pull
out some last minute hucks to take a back and forth game to a 7-5 victory. The C-Div finals went
to the wire, with multiple turnovers on both sides at double game-point, till the disc finally
found Pimento hands for a 7-6 edge over Staring at the Sun.
A-Division semis pitted underdog Snow Leopards against the 06 reigning champs, Catfight, whod
gone 5-0 in pool play. LTs Leopards kept their cool as the game came down to double game-point
at 5s, with the Brooks Catfight missing multiple opportunities to score, and the Snow Leopards
pouncing to advance to the finals with a narrow 6-5 victory. In the other semis game, Taylor
Popes Throw, Flow, Cut Your Throat squad was matched up against Alison Murrays Ill Mess with TX
posse. Popes bandidos could not escape the Augie to Liz connection, and they succumbed 5-7.
Snow Leopards faced off against Ill Mess with TX. Both teams seemed improbable participants, as
each had overcome seed and modest pool-play performance to reach the finals. LT and Tammy Moose
anchored the Leopards, at least with the short passes, while Charlie Kroger gave them the
full-field throws. On the other side, TXs Augie provided the firepower while Robbye Brooks and
Alison Murray ensured the disc stayed alive underneath. TX took the lead at 3-1, but some strong
play from the Leopards and a few TX bobbles brought it to 4-3, with Snow Leopards making a run for
the lead. TX bore down, with strong defensive play from youngsters Mack Garrison and Stephen
Panasci, and the Leopards could not get a break, finally succumbing as Augie landed a hammer
softly into Liz Mahannas hands.
While the B and C division teams each received some token prizes, the A-Div champs only got
bragging rights.
Congratulations to Ill Mess with TX, Everyone Loves Little Spoon, and Pimento Mori.
Rosters:
The special feature of this Savage Seven tourney is that teams can comprise no more than 26
points, with players being ranked for their level of play during the past three years, with the
highest value (6) going to Nationals-caliber players and 1 going for players who only play pick-up
games.
