Hi everyone,

I'll be offering a "skills and drills" clinic this weekend at 11 and again
at 2 (or when Field 4 and I become available after the 12 o'clock game).
If you're a new, relatively new, or even an experienced player looking to
warm up and practice, and you want to work on basics of throwing and
cutting, feel free to attend. Here's what I currently plan to cover, but
if people are beyond this level we'll change it up:

1. Throwing basics. We'll form two lines facing each other so everyone has
a partner, and we'll throw 20 (or more) of each of the 7 basic throws:
flat backhand, flat forehand, inside-out backhand, inside-out forehand,
outside-in forehand, outside-in backhand, and the hammer. We can talk
about release points for each throw, and details of when each is
appropriate.

2. Throwing with a mark. Two lines again, but this time in a stack. One
line will throw, one will receive. The throwers will have a mark and we'll
have the receivers cutting. Before the drill we can talk about basics for
cutters and throwers both (pivoting to move the mark, fakes, good cuts vs.
bad cuts, etc.). We'll do it backhand and forehand.

3. Time permitting, we'll also do the "kill drill" (also called the
nietzche drill or the windshield wiper). The thrower stands still and
throws to a receiver making sweeping "windshield wiper" cuts
back-and-forth, throwing nice leading passes (we hope!). The receiver has
to catch up to each pass, make the catch, pivot, and throw back to the
thrower. This will help throwers work on throwing leading passes, and
helps receivers work on making a catch and then collecting oneself to make
a good throw. Added bonus: this drill will improve your wind (there's a
reason it's called the kill drill).

Finally, I'll be available to answer questions about anything
Ultimate-related (within reason! Alan Hoyle and all you other smart-a$$es,
just keep it to yourself, ya hear? ;-)

If you're planning to attend this weekend, I'd REALLY appreciate it if you
let me know just so I have a feel for how many we'll have. But you can
still attend if you decide you want to at the last minute! Also, please
bring your own disc (clearly marked with your name) to ensure we have
enough discs for the drills.

And to answer the question before it's even asked....Yes, I'll be bringing
cookies. Consider that a bribe. If we get rained out this weekend I will
announce cancellations or whatever as needed.

Thanks,

Beej
