**Close competition in Sunday's Master's Hat Tourney**
Hat tournaments are great: the spirit, the attitude, the broad range
of people involved.
Add great weather and very close competition, a growler of micro brew
to the winners of the first games of the day, more growlers for
everyone to ease any disappointment, a gift certificate for a weekend
long equipment rental from REI, won by Rocky Paine, and a $25 gift
card to WholeFoods (who also donated water and some Passive Demo
Snacks), won by Bill Kiether, and you have the perfect day.
Of course, drawing names out of a hat doesn't always lead to well
balanced teams, but we got lucky with this draw. Teams, although
unimaginatively named, were closely matched as proven by the days
stats:
Team C, lead by Tom "down by one when I left" Reid
2, 1 for the day - beating Team B head to head 9 to 8 to claim tourney honors.
Team B, lead by Brian Zuercher
2, 1 for the day - losing only to the tourney winners by one as noted above
Team D, lead by Scott Vande....
1, 2 for the day - missing one of the tourneys top handlers, but
still beating the tourney winners, Team C (if they only had all their
players....)
And Team A, lead by TJ "warm up drill" Cawley
1, 2 for the day - with a win against D who beat C who beat B who beat A....
All games were close, but two games were decided on double game point
(C vs. B 9-8 and B vs. D 10-9 with the time cap on).
The initial plan was to play a round robin followed by a single game
between the top two and the bottom two teams. This would have lead to
a repeat of the last game of the round robin. With a few people
pleading family obligations needing to leave, we settled the all
important final standings after the round robin and commenced a pick
up game with all involved.
All four tents were positioned on the side line of the main field,
Growlers were emptied, Tom Lyndes set up his grill, and a mellow game
was played to provide opportunities to heckle for the sideline.
Thanks for all who came out. In addition to having a great day, you
helped raised $800 for the Ultiplex.
