Backhoe's Winston Cup Challenge was held this weekend in Winston-Salem,
NC on verdant, plush, and lined fields. The ten women's teams that
competed for the coveted Winston Cup were:
Ambush (NY, NY)
Backhoe (Raleigh, NC)
BNOGO (DC)
Brute Squad (Boston, MA)
Layuma (Florida combo)
Ozone (Atlanta, GA)
Pi (DC)
Strut (Ann Arbor, MI)
Sweet T (Raleigh, NC)
Wahine (Wilmington, NC)
The goal of the tournament was to ensure that all teams got their entry
fee's worth. All teams played 7 games over 2 days, with 2 hour rounds
and no byes with the exception of a tournament-wide Saturday lunch
break. We wanted to ensure that teams got to play the maximum number
of competitive games. The tournament was a juggle format, with teams
able to request the teams they played. We used WAFC Fools Fest's
(www.wafc.org/fools) juggle format to rank the teams after scores were
reported.

* There was a finals round scheduled in Round 8, but since both Backhoe
and Brute were ranked #1s in the power ranking, the captains decided to
make round 7 the finals game instead of playing repeat games.
The final game was very exciting. Backhoe was down 8 - 4 at half and
then 10 - 5. Seemed like our dark jerseys were giving us heat stroke
as we were completely lethargic. After a timeout, Coach Dobyns rallied
the troops and we refocused together as a team. Soon we narrowed the
gap to 12-10. Then the game was tied 14-14, hard capped at 15. This
point wins. Backhoe's Katy Harris calls a timeout on our goal line.
After a few seconds of great marking by Brute, Katy gets the disc to
Beth Stagner. Brute played really good poaching D on the cutters for
Beth and the marker is at stall 9. Beth throws a hammer over the
poachers to a leaping Cate Foster for the exciting comeback win, 15 -14.
Thanks to Brute for a very fun game.
Final power rankings according to the WAFC Fools Fest juggle:
1. Backhoe
2. Brute Squad
3. Ozone
4. BNOGO
5. Sweet T
6. Layuma
7. Wahine
8. Ambush
9. Strut
10. Pi
My tournament co-director, Tammy Moose, is all about southern
hospitality. She made sure that Backhoe provided teams with plenty of
ice, gatorade, lunch fixins (turkey, american cheese, string cheese,
hummus, gogurt, hard boiled eggs, peanut butter, jelly, bread, fruit,
pickles, animal crackers, peanut butter pretzels) and then served each
team at least 5 pizzas for dinner on Saturday after play and had sodas
on ice for every player. She also got a sweet deal at a pretty swanky
hotel that allowed dogs! As the Winston Cup was the sister tournament
of the Furniture City Shootout (open teams) ~ 20 minutes away, we held a
joint party with that tournament. [I heard] there was a funky band,
good beer, and it was very fun.
We are looking to expand the field at this tournament next year. As you
are considering your team's travel in 2007, ask any of the teams that
attended for a WCC recommendation.
Hope to see you next year.
