Instead of trying one host until it timeouts or replies, fping will send out a ping packet and move on to the next host in a round-robin fashion. If a host replies, it is noted and removed from the list of hosts to check. If a host does not respond within a certain time limit and/or retry limit it will be considered unreachable. fping is useful to anyone needing to monitor a large network. The first package is for Solaris 2.6 SPARC, others due shortly. http://metalab.unc.edu/pub/packages/solris/sparc/ (x86 and SPARC) Cheers, Mark mark@zang.com mark@metalab.unc.edu From mark@zang.com Mon Mar 08 23:16:30 1999 Return-Path: Received: from zang.com ([209.133.38.14]) by franklin.oit.unc.edu with SMTP (Lyris Server version 3.0); Mon, 08 Mar 1999 23:16:10 -0500 Received: (from mark@localhost) by zang.com (8.9.1a/8.9.1) id UAA03062 for solaris-packages-announce@franklin.oit.unc.edu; Mon, 8 Mar 1999 20:16:29 -0800 (PST) From: Mark (Mookie) Message-Id: <199903090416.UAA03062@zang.com> Subject: solaris packages: more fping versions To: solaris-packages-announce@franklin.oit.unc.edu Date: Mon, 8 Mar 1999 20:16:29 -0800 (PST) X-Mailer: ELM [version 2.4 PL23] Content-Type: text fping.2.2b1.SPARC.32bit.Solaris.7.pkg.tgz fping.2.2b1.i86pc.Solaris.2.6.pkg.tgz http://metalab.unc.edu/pub/packages/solaris/sparc/ The others when I get home and power up the "wall of sound" as I call the lab machines. I'm pleased to announce I can now produce SPARC 64 bit packages for Solaris 7. Below are listed some packages I made this afternoon to test out the setup. They can be found at: http://metalab.unc.edu/pub/packages/solaris/sparc/ GNUindent.1.10.0.SPARC.64bit.Solaris.7.pkg.tgz GNUtar.1.12.SPARC.64bit.Solaris.7.pkg.tgz GNUzip.1.2.4.SPARC.64bit.Solaris.7.pkg.tar less.340.SPARC.64bit.Solaris.7.pkg.tgz md5sum.1.00.SPARC.64bit.Solaris.7.pkg.tgz traceroute.3.5.SPARC.64bit.Solaris.7.pkg.tgz They'll propagate to the mirrors in a few days. A compiler (egcs) will take a little while to verify how 64bit compliant it is, but most other tools should be appearing gradually. I'm using SUNWspro 5.0 cc to generate them for those who are interested. I will switch to egcs and maybe re-make the current packages with it when I switch over. (To be compliant with the GNU debuggers etc). Intel packages for Solaris 7 aren't on the menu yet until I get some hardware to run it on. I need to get another machine for Solaris 2.6 x86 too btw since I don't have access to one of those machines now. Note that except for top and the compilers and gdb, all the 32bit packages for Solaris 7 run quite happily on the 64bit machines. However I've been updating the documentation and have included a great little bulk installation script. Simply create a directory with the packages you wish to install and run the script and it will generate a custom shell script to add your packages to your system. It even recognises those slightly non-conventional packages with different directory names from their package filename. You can either check out the script from the Bulk Installation link from the main menu or go to it directly via: http://metalab.unc.edu/pub/packages/solaris/sparc/html/autoinstall.html You will see the script at the bottom. I wrote this in the last week because I've been installing way too many new versions of Solaris to do it even slightly manually :) A few of you may also find it useful. SunSITE Poland has been mirroring for a while and participating in the statistics collection as well. It's slightly different from the other mirrors in that it's FTP only, but if you point your browser at a HTML file, such as the index.html then it all works just fine. The administrator for the site is Wojtek Sylwestrzak and the URLs for accessing the archive are: ftp://sunsite.icm.edu.pl/pub/solaris/sparc/ ftp://sunsite.icm.edu.pl/pub/solaris/i86pc/ http://sunsite.icm.edu.pl/pub/solaris/sparc/index.html I'd like to thank Wojtek for his vision and assistance in providing this service to the Solaris community. Remember though, I am the one to contact if you have any queries about the packages themselves. If you want to discuss the software itself, please contact the authors mentioned in each Status URL. I hope those of you in Europe find the new archive useful as it offers even more service to you in that part of the world. I imagine ISPs charge a lot for international traffic there as well. Package production will be continuing again, I was travelling for over a month and have been doing overtime to resuscitate the credit cards but things now look to be in control. Some new packages to watch for include the latest xv, MRTG, BIND, sendmail and also GIMP. These will appear in the next few weeks. The good news is I have another week of idle time and some seriously idle time soon in which I can be producing packages. As some of you have seen, metalab.unc.edu is now know as iBiblio.org, some artsy type name describing the site as a digital library. This will probably be stable for at least four years since that's how long the Red Hat Center is donating money for! I have some reservations about the move to an i86pc platform and a version of RH Linux though... Nonetheless the UNC folks are doing a great job and I must again thank them for all their support over the years. The new name doesn't affect anything at all really since the machine still answers to sunsite.unc.edu and metalab.unc.edu as well as ibiblio.org. You can keep your bookmarks to the Solaris Package Archive and they will continue to work properly. Use what you remember best. I'm tinkering with the look and feel of the site a little too, there is a big title GIF and I'm improving the HTML correctness of the page. Even the disabled will be catered for with some more modifications. This will include the use of style sheets so make sure you are up to date with your browsers before it goes live. If you don't know what I mean don't worry too much. Some email list trivia, we're at 1,125 members, the 1,000th being added in June. No I don't know who that was. Welcome anyway. Now, to todays package update; strange as it may seem people out there are using the 32 bit kernels on sun4u hardware. I've had a request to provide top(1) binaries for these combinations. The package: top.3.5b8.SPARC.32bit.Solaris.7.pkg.tgz has had its' contents changed from: top-3.5b8-sun4m-5.7 to the new binaries: top-3.5b8-sun4m-5.7-32bit top-3.5b8-sun4u-5.7-32bit The sun4m binary is the same so there is no need to install the new package if you have it installed and running. If you want to update your package however then do this: cd /var/tmp umask 022 Fetch the top.3.5b8.SPARC.32bit.Solaris.7.pkg.tgz package pkgrm top gunzip -c top.3.5b8.SPARC.32bit.Solaris.7.pkg.tgz | /usr/bin/tar -xvf - pkgadd -d. top This will properly remove the old top package before installing the new package. This is so you don't have old binaries laying around. I expect to issue similar packages for the Solaris 8 combinations at this time tomorrow. If you do want to update your package, remember to use 'pkgrm top' to remove the older copy before installing the new one. Tomorrow I'll have a sun4d binary for Solaris 8 machines too. That has a lot to do with my reading abilities :) The old solaris-packages-announce mailing list was EOL'd and I didn't fully read the email announcing this. I've been posting to a missing list for the last nine months :) I blame spam. Long story. Anyway the list has been ressurected using GNU mailman and everything is as it was late last year. Below are several announcements that I sent out during the year which you won't have seen. I've put them into chronological order so you can skip over the packages you know you already have. Thanks for your patience. If you wish to email me please prefix your subject with "solaris-packages" so I can find it in the spam noise. These packages can be found at: http://www.ibilblio.org/pub/packages/solaris/sparc/ Cheers, Mark.
