In case you need to do this in the future:
It needs to have DISPLAY set to the proper X server already running with
no other manager running. You can set an xinitrc to exec startkde at
the end (/etc/xinitrc or ~/.xinitrc) (there are other ways too) when you
run startx. I don't remember what we're using to set the default xinit
process during startx, as I think we just let the X install process
provide its own way.
