OK I did some research:

Basically yes. i915 option should be removed from the drm spell and the
linux version used. That's all it seems. Or we could just reverse apply
that commit and still keep i915 support in the drm spell ;)

Hope this helps for others as well. One suggestion provide a warning in
the drm spell about what drivers are fully maintained in kernel as
opposed to in drm.
