Not to mention all the issues people have been recently having with
evdev anyway.

People have problems with evdev mainly due to misconfiguration. Hotplugging is a new thing to X and have to be understood along with the benefits it delivers. Howtos like this http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Xorg_input_hotplugging are around for a long time helping the process.
Technical problems occur rarely and to very old or very new/odd hardware.
Evdev is a pretty solid thing. Making it the default driver instead of 'just a sane option' won't be so radical. Tomorrow when someone talk about X configuration, he will assume you are using evdev. I think it's pretty natural.
