Imho, upstream is gmime 2.4, it is part of gnome 2.24.
It is a problem of those applications they are not compatible with upstream.
There is for example patch for balsa to be compatible with gmime 2.4

I didn't test it. Who uses balsa can test.
We can make multiversion gmime with 2.24 default.
