on my normal setup, using kde3, I have the following kde packages installed

$ grep kde /var/state/sorcery/packages
kdeadmin:20070531:installed:3.5.7
kdepim:20070601:installed:3.5.7
kdeutils:20070601:installed:3.5.7
kdegraphics:20070801:installed:3.5.7
kdenetwork:20070801:installed:3.5.7
kdenlive:20070812:installed:0.5
kdelibs:20070822:installed:3.5.7
kdebase:20070822:installed:3.5.7
kdelibs4:20070906:installed:3.93.0
kdepimlibs4:20070906:installed:3.93.0
kdetoys4:20070907:installed:3.93.0
kdeadmin4:20070907:installed:3.93.0
kdemultimedia4:20070907:installed:3.93.0
kdenetwork4:20070907:installed:3.93.0
kdegames4:20070907:installed:3.93.0
kdebase-workspace4:20070907:installed:3.93.0
kdepim4:20070907:installed:3.93.0
kdeedu4:20070908:installed:3.93.0

with my default user in a kde3 session I have run various kde4 apps, just by
typing the name

eg
$ /opt/bin/kgeography
kgeography(12651)/kdecore (KConfigSkeleton) KConfigSkeleton::KConfigSkeleton:
Creating KConfigSkeleton ( 0x815aa68 )
kgeography(12651)/kdecore (KConfigSkeleton) KConfigSkeleton::readConfig:
KConfigSkeleton::readConfig()
QCoreApplication::postEvent: Unexpected null receiver
kgeography(12651)/kdecore (KConfigSkeleton) KConfigSkeleton::writeConfig:
KConfigSkeleton::writeConfig()
kgeography(12651)/kdecore (KConfigSkeleton) KConfigSkeleton::readConfig:
KConfigSkeleton::readConfig()
QCoreApplication::postEvent: Unexpected null receiver

In spite of the error messages, the program works and shows me some nice maps.

and

$ /opt/bin/kstars
kstars(12657) SimClock::setUTC: "Setting clock:  UTC: Mon Sep 10 2007 18:10:27
JD: 2,454,354.26"

KConfigSkeleton::writeConfig()
kstars(12657)/kdecore (KConfigSkeleton) KConfigSkeleton::readConfig:
KConfigSkeleton::readConfig()

I have not yet tried some of the more important programs, such as kmail, but
/opt/bin/kaddressbook finds my existing address book.
