Alright, good. Here's why your modules weren't loading:
If hotplug is installed (enabled or not), the udev spell doesn't install rules
for autoloading modules. And of course if hotplug is disabled, there is no
module autoloading in your system at all.
Dispeling hotplug triggers a recast of udev, which will then install the
module autoloading rules. So be sure to allow it.
