Treeve,

change the \ to be:
sed 's|:version|2.9.05d|g; '\
     's|:sysconfdir|/etc|g; '

sed doesn't usually grok the newlines well, so you continuation them in 
bash instead of sed so that bash converts them to a normalized 
whitespace.  At least, that works for me.
