I have similar problems.  Actually SMGL was one of the few Linuces which
would properly install on my athlon xp system and work right off the
bat, partially by dint of being able to compile a proper kernel right
away.  I think it is a Good Thing to be able to compile the kernel from
the installation menu when necessary (of course, you can also shell out
and do this manually... My favorite thing about SMGL's installer is you
can shell out at any point in the install and there is even a menu
option to do so.
