Excuse me for splitting hairs, but Linux was written for 386s (a 32-bit
protected mode processor, compared to the 286 which is a 16-bit
protected mode processor). It was aimed at what was high end at the
time. In fact I remember people complaining about this requirement, as
at the time people mostly had 286s.

Probably not so much of an issue with those of us running the likes of
reiser which can take it.
