I remember having this kind of problem (all GTK apps' fonts borked) after some 
upgrade a while back. IIRC, I just had to recast gtk+2 to make the evil 
squares go away. So although I do think that the pango spell shouldn't 
install a devel version, your problem may not be a result of that. Perhaps 
it's just a linking problem in gtk+2 resulting from a changed pango major 
version?
