Dead Meadow (matador records/tolotta records)
Taija Rae
Cold Sides

This is going to be one incredible evening-Dead Meadow create absolutely authentic heavy psychedelia, the sound is best compared to warm, runny honey...soft dewy grass... vibrant crackingbonfires... or dark rumbling thunder. They come from washington dc, and are already forming an undergroundrailroad of devotees, and earlier in 2002 were guests of John Peel for a BBC Radio One session (which theywere allowed to record at home - a rarity for R1 andindicative of just how determined Mr Peel was!) They have toured extensively in the U.S. (and some in
Europe) with the likes of Guided by Voices, Super Furry Animals and west coast underground psychedlicveterans Brian Jonestown Massacre. Recently, the bandhas signed to Matador Records.
Opening the show will be Chapel-Hill up and comers, Cold Sides and the lush, somewhat ethereal pop inspired rock stylings of greensboro's Taija Rae.

The Desert City Reading Series presents:

Jane Mead

"I Have Been Living"
by Jane Mead

I have been living
closer to the ocean than I thought--
in a rocky cove thick with seaweed.

It pulls me down when I go wading.
Sometimes, to get back to land
takes everything that I have in me.

Sometimes, to get back to land
is the worst thing a person can do.
Meanwhile, we are dreaming:

The body is innocent.
She has never hurt me.
What we love flutters in us.

pearlmerchant
Songs of Water

pearlmerchant is an independent seven-piece acoustic-worldbeat band from winston-salem. With two violins and a strong celtic influence, their songs have been described as haunting and inspiring. Musical flights into gospel and opera, medieval marches and passionate vocals all tied to grand pianoscapes, stretches of classical violin and percussion... "This experience is like some beautiful foreign film" -ESP Magazine, Greensboro, NC
Their latest cd is available at www.cdbaby.com/pearlmerchant2.
Songs of Water can be described as a world folk band, with influences ranging from african and middle eastern to american and irish. The songs are percussion heavy with lots of improv. Each member plays several instruments over the course of a show, from hammer dulcimer, violin and mandolin, guitar, trumpet, and percussion. Shows follow a fluidity of movement from one
song to the next.
